December – January Powder

December – January Powder

With an average snowpack of over 250cm by mid-December (at treeline) and 300cm by January, it only makes sense that skiing deep powder in January is an absolute highlight. But what makes January powder skiing at Durrand Glacier the very best of any area in Canada is not just the guaranteed super light powder snow, it is the numerous long tree skiing runs. Guests often comment that tree skiing at Durrand Glacier is the very best anywhere. Well, maybe this is true. All I know, every time I ski one or several of our 47 tree runs, it feels as I just experienced the epitome of steep powder skiing.

Tree skiing can be found in a lot of areas. But what makes tree skiing and January Powder at Durrand Glacier so special it the length of the runs and incredible variety of terrain in the trees. For the most part of my guiding I prefer being in the high alpine, but every time I ski these amazing tree runs, my heartbeat is high, my inspiration far ahead and my energy is unstoppable. This is such an incredible experience; I want to share it with you.

If you have skied or splitboarded Durrand Glacier in January, you know what I am talking about …. it is simply unbeatable. This is why after 35 years of guiding at the Durrand Glacier area it all still feels today as it is the very first time. If the superlative does exist, then Durrand Glacier must be it.
