Ski the
Durrand Glacier

Hut to Hut skiing

Alpine Touring Gear, Telemark, Split-Snowboard

Hut to Hut skiing - SME Hut to Hut skiing from the Durrand Glacier Chalet to the Mt. Moloch Chalet is a unique and exceptional experience. With light packs you climb superb alpine peaks and ski superb alpine terrain with impressive glaciers covered with deep and light powder.

The Mt. Moloch Chalet

The Mt. Moloch Chalet is located in a very imposing and impressive glacier cirque, surrounded by huge glaciers, wild broken ice falls and steep granite faces. The area is crowned by jagged alpine peaks with knife sharp granite ridges. The Mt. Moloch Chalet is built on top of a scenic knoll, 3 kilometers up the Dismal Glacier and at elevation 2230 m. / 7300 ft. This cedar / pine Swiss style chalet is welcoming and comfortable. With its size of 1450 square feet it offers more than enough space for up to 11 guests. It is fully equipped, has a large entrance room, large day room and four bedrooms with full bedding.

The tour to the Mt. Moloch Chalet

There are many different routes leading from the Durrand Glacier Chalet to the Mt. Moloch Chalet.

A more moderate level route leads over Mt. Fang and Philharmonic Glacier and requires a minimum of 4500 v. feet / 1300 v. meters to be climbed and skied.

A more strenuous route leads over Mt. Ruth to the Amphitheatre and Meeting Of Glaciers and finally up the Dismal Glacier to the Mt. Moloch Chalet. This tour has 6000 v. feet / 1800 v. meters of climbing and skiing.

Finally the most challenging but also most impressive route leads to Mt. Ruth, Ruth Glacier, Dismal Peak and Concordia Ice Fall. This route is strenuous and requires excellent endurance and skiing techniques as you climb and ski over 6000 v. feet / 1800 v. meters in challenging glaciated terrain.

Touring out of the Mt. Moloch Chalet

As we usually stay two nights at the Mt. Moloch Chalet, we get a chance to ski one of the most superb ski-tours in the world: The Swiss Round Tour.

This tour leads us to the 9840 foot / 3000 meter high summit of Mt. Graham. From there we ski the steep Graham Glacier of up to 4000 v. feet / 1220 v. meters and move on to Zwilling's Peak and Zwilling's Glacier. Finally we end on the summit of Sentinel South and ski the perfect fall-line of the 1800 v. foot / 750 v. meter Sentinal Face, directly to the entrance door of the Mt. Moloch Chalet. There are many more tours in the Moloch area, but the Swiss Round Tour is truly hard to beat and is definitely a favourite.

Skiing back to the Durrand Glacier Chalet

There are again many different routes leading from the Mt. Moloch Chalet back to the Durrand Glacier Chalet. We do our very best to not repeat a route and most likely we will ski a different tour to the Durrand Glacier Chalet than what we skied on the way to the Mt. Moloch Chalet.

Safety Gear

SME will supply all guests, free of charge, with avalanche safety beacons, avalanche shovels, avalanche probes, emergency radios (two per group) and avalanche safety packs (the ABS Pack). The ABS Pack is a mechanical avalanche safety devise with a hand-trigger that, in case of an avalanche, can be pulled. Within 3 seconds two large air-bags inflate, thus greatly increasing the chance of staying on the surface of an avalanche.
